The Button Battery Problem: Small Part, Serious Injury

Button and coin cell batteries power a huge share of child-facing products: toys, books, remote controls, thermometers, light-up shoes, greeting cards, key fobs, hearing aids. They are also one of the most frequent hazards in children’s product recalls — and one of the few where the difference between acting now and acting after symptoms appear genuinely matters.
Why this hazard is different
An ingested button cell does not simply pass through. In the oesophagus, the battery’s current generates hydroxide at its surface, which can burn tissue within a short period. Symptoms in the first hours can be mild or absent — which is exactly why the guidance is not to wait for symptoms before seeking medical assessment.
There is a second mechanism: inhaled cells. A button cell lodged in an airway is a separate emergency with its own presentation.
What makes a product risky
The hazard is about access, not chemistry. A product becomes dangerous when a child can reach the cell without a tool:
- A compartment that opens by hand — a friction latch, a sliding door, a press-and-turn cover without a screw.
- A screw that can be removed with a household screwdriver, or one that strips and loosens.
- A cell held in place by friction that gives way when the product is dropped.
- Products designed for adults but reachable by children: scales, thermometers, keyfobs, musical cards, flameless candles.
- Spare cells: a pack left in a drawer is a standalone hazard.
What US rules now require
In response to the pattern of injuries, US requirements now apply to many consumer products that contain button or coin cells: child-resistant packaging for the cells themselves, secure compartments on products designed for children, warning labels, and — for toys — testing against the relevant safety standard. A recall notice in this family typically cites the standard the product fails rather than a specific failure mode.
That matters practically: when a notice says a product violates a mandatory standard for button cell access, there is no “only some units” nuance to investigate. The compartment is the defect.
What to check at home, in five minutes
- Find every product with a button cell — including the ones you would not think of: scales, thermometers, key fobs, flameless candles, musical cards, remote controls.
- Test the compartment by hand. If it opens without a tool, treat it as a risk item, not a “keep an eye on it” item.
- Check the screw. If it strips, replace or tape the compartment shut rather than relying on it.
- Store spare cells out of reach, in child-resistant packaging, not in an open drawer.
- Check current recalls for the products you have identified. Button cell recalls are frequent and are usually narrowed by model and date code.
